A good first day in Verona is not a race through every landmark. Begin at Piazza Bra, follow the centre on foot, cross the river if time allows, then leave the evening for food or a performance.

Morning: Piazza Bra to Piazza delle Erbe
Start with the Arena and Piazza Bra, then take the central streets toward Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori. Juliet's House is on this route, but treat it as one stop rather than the whole purpose of the morning.
Afternoon: choose one meaningful detour
Choose Castelvecchio, the Roman Theatre and Veronetta, or Giusti Garden. One proper visit and an unhurried walk will tell you more about the city than trying to collect every ticketed sight.
Evening: let the timetable choose
If you have an Arena ticket, build the late afternoon around Piazza Bra. Otherwise, use the evening for aperitivo, dinner and a walk along the Adige.
