The Arena is Verona's famous open-air stage, but it is not the only place where a summer evening can become a performance. On 25 and 26 August 2026, Zorba the Greek returns to the Roman Theatre, bringing Mikis Theodorakis' music and Lorca Massine's choreography to the smaller, hillside setting across the Adige.

For visitors, this is a useful alternative to an Arena night rather than a lesser version of one. The Roman Theatre has a different scale and a different arrival: river below, stone seating on the slope and Veronetta behind you. It is the sort of evening that asks for a slower walk and rewards staying on that side of the city a little longer.

Why Zorba belongs in Verona

Fondazione Arena confirms two 2026 performances on 25 and 26 August as part of the 103rd Arena di Verona Opera Festival. The story has a long local connection. The Foundation notes that the ballet had its world premiere in the Arena in 1988 before returning to Verona in later productions, including its recent Roman Theatre run.

You do not need prior knowledge of ballet to understand the attraction. Zorba is built around a recognisable score, large physical energy and a story about resilience, grief and life. In an outdoor Roman theatre, those qualities can feel immediate even for someone who usually chooses concerts over dance.

Make the theatre the destination

Start early on the east bank of the Adige. Ponte Pietra, the archaeological area and the river views give the walk a natural rhythm before the performance. This is not an evening for crossing the bridge at the last possible minute after an overfull day in the centre.

A light dinner in Veronetta, a pause by the river and a little extra time for the uphill approach will make the night easier. The Roman Theatre is close to the historic centre, but the atmosphere changes once you arrive. Let that change be part of the plan instead of treating it as an inconvenience.
